6 Tips On How To Stay Calm In A Survival Situation

Life can be stressful as it is, but when you’re in a crisis, the stress can get much worse. Being a flood victim, experiencing a hurricane tear through your neighborhood, being in a war-zone, etc. are all traumatic events and situations that can leave you with frazzled nerves.

If you are stressed out, you might even notice symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, upset stomach, sweating and even dizziness. You can easily become irritated and angry. Small things can startle or scare you.

When I get stressed or panicked I just can’t think.  My mind goes blank.  It’s like I become frozen.  At a time like this it can be a matter of life or death to keep your wits about you.  What is that saying from Kipling saying  “If you can keep your head when all about you… Are losing theirs and blaming it on you .”

Here are six tips you can use that can help in calming yourself down especially during times of chaos while keeping your sanity.

  1. Visualization

Visualize peaceful images or desired outcomes, you’ll be able to mentally remove yourself from the difficult situation you’re currently in.  ‘It’s all about mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.’  Keep your spirits up with positive visualizations.

  1. Deep breathing

If you happen to know yoga then that would be an excellent way to de-stress. If you don’t know yoga, take deep breaths.  This will help in calming yourself down and it will also oxygenate your body. Take a deep breath, hold it for 4 counts and slowly exhale. Do this a few times and you’ll feel much more refreshed. If not, rinse and repeat.

  1. Planning

Planning makes you feel like you’re in control of the situation. One of the reasons so many people get stressed out is because they think that they’re not in control of the situation. They are clueless about what to do.  This ends up creating a feeling of helplessness and vulnerability. Often can lead to panic or worse.

Be proactive as you plan your next moves.  This can help in making you  feel in control and you’ll be less likely to get stressed. The very act of planning is a proactive one.

  1. Exercise

When it comes to de-stressing, nothing quite beats physical exertion. During a crisis, you’ll have a lot of physical chores to do. Keep moving and get as much activity and exercise as you can. When you’re engaged in physical activity, your mind doesn’t have time to slip into the doldrums. An idle mind is a devil’s workshop.

  1. Routine

Have a daily routine that you follow. Just because things around you are chaotic doesn’t mean that your life must be too. Having a routine and following it will keep your life predictable and less stressful during these tumultuous times.

These stress management tips also apply to everyday life as well as in a crises. Be sure you’re familiar with the techniques and apply them, especially the ones that work for you.                                                                                                 Remember this…

Maintaining Your Health As An Older Adult

Like it or not, our nutritional needs are a matter of life or death.  Too often we take eating and what we eat for granted.  As we age, EVERYTHING ages.  Everything, literally starts to break down.

Our nutritional needs change as we get older.  Ashley (in the above video) will break it all down for you. She explains how everything slows down, from our metabolism to our medications, as well as just not being as mobile as we once were.

It is crucial to stay hydrated, especially as we age.  If not, you can become dehydrated.  This can lead to all kinds of things. From your electrolytes getting out of balance causing you to become unstable and out of balance.  If it gets bad enough it can lead to death. One thing seems to trigger another.

Not drinking enough water can lead to becoming bloated, can cause upset stomach, constipation, insomnia, low energy, along with other normal body functions.

Too often people wait until they actually feel thirsty, but if you wait that long? It is too late.  You are supposed to drink at least half your body weight, in fluid ounces per day.

If you are like me, I often forget or get distracted to drink as much water as you are supposed to throughout the day.  You can purchase different types of smart watches or as well as different apps that can be programmed to remind you how much water you have consumed so far.  It can be annoying but so can poor health.

What is YOUR why?

Do you have a why in your life? A reason that keeps you motivated and helps you to get out of bed each morning? If you don’t you may often feel as though you are just plodding along the path of life. All you do is go through the motions of living without having anything to look forward to.

If you don’t have a why in your life then it is definitely time to discover what yours is. Most likely you have a dream or a goal that you would love to pursue, but for some reason you don’t.

For anyone that is attempting to achieve something or reach a goal it is much easier to do so if you have a reason for it. This way of thinking is often associated with people who are trying to lose weight. Nothing seems to work for them until they uncover the true reason for why they want to lose weight.

Your why can be quite simple and it could be doing certain things in order to become healthier. Or maybe you why is to start an online business so you can retire your partner from their job.

Your why is often associated around your health, family, and financial goals. After all without money you can’t pay the bills or buy food to feed your family.

One thing to bear in mind, as well, is that your why can change as you grow. As your life changes so do the things you need, this can give you a different purpose in life.

A younger person may have a why of saving for a new home, or getting a University degree. As you age your why may change to include exercising more so you can enjoy your grandchildren and be more mobile.

Many people will turn to religion in order to uncover their why. No two people will ever share the same why. You may have the same goal as someone else. But you will both have different reasons for attaining them.

The best way to discover your why is to be honest with yourself. This requires letting all your skeletons out of your closet. Sit down in a quiet place and truly think about what it is you want out of life.

This is not always an easy process and even when you do understand what your why is. You may not know how to achieve it at first. Just remember to keep an open mind and start working in a small way each day to achieve your why.
